Winter Riding Tips 101 – The
Obvious and Not So Obvious
First, I just want to say sorry
about the long hiatus with this article. I got sick and did not finish my
season the way I thought I would. Oh well.
The Obvious:
Under all circumstances, keep
warm. Remember this is New Mexico and it can be both warm and frigid in the
same day let alone the same ride .[winter]
Drafting and Bottomless Lakes - Do's and Don'ts
Part 1
The Bottomless Lakes F-1 Draft legal race is this coming weekend down in
Roswell. As triathletes we are taught to NOT draft or we will be penalized.
This race is a draft legal race. What does that mean? It means that we are
allowed to draft the other competitors during the bike portion.

Drafting and Bottomless Lakes
Part 2
Well Part 1 dealt with spacing and position and braking in the draft.
Part 2 is going to deal with when and how to rotate through a paceline.
When you are drafting, you are doing so in order to keep out of the wind.
This raises questions. When do I take my turn at the front? When do I come
off the front and get my turn in the draft? How do I go to the back? When do
I attack (if at all)?

Clincher vs. Tubulars:
The other day our local editor (Mike) asked me
why I race on tubulars. Well basically I said that I just prefer them. I started
thinking “Why?” Well I can think of at least four reasons. 1) Because they are
lighter, 2) they grip the road better, especially in corners, 3) they seem to
cushion the ride more, and 4) they have a lower rolling resistance because they
can generally be pumped to higher pressures. These last two issues seem to
contradict each other but the ride does feel a lot softer. The tubulars do have
a lower rolling resistance. The study was conducted by Texas A&M back in the
early ‘90’s. I don’t remember the details but the bottom line was that tubular
were proven to be faster than a clincher. [ClinchervsTublar]
Confessions of an
H2O Gourmet
Rusty Deblassie has
hobbies. Like many he enjoys stamp collecting, needlepoint, quiltmaking and
collecting 18th century bottle openers. Rusty does however have another hobby,
one that he discovered only earlier this season. Just 10 yards from the start of
his first open water race (Milkman Triathlon), Rusty took a big gulp of Dexter's
finest thanks to a well placed kick in the jaw.

The Joys Of Being
Prepared
Well this is kinda difficult
to write this. I am sitting in a tent 13 miles east of Roswell, NM the night
before the first installment of the Bottomless Lakes Series. Right now it is
dark and I am writing this on my palm top with its glow display screen
