Road Trip to Interbike!I’ve taken a small change
in focus this month. Early in October, "Rattlesnake" Mark Mackenzie and I made a
trip to Interbike in Las
Vegas, NV to cover the show and to do some work for Tri Team SW. In the
spirit of those great roadtrip genre movies..........here is a recap of our
experience at the "Worlds Biggest Bike Expo Welcome To The Dog Dayshey're still here............the dog days of summer racing. If you started your season at the Wind Duathlon or maybe even the Quad............you've put your time in already. Some local athletes may have competed 15 times or more already this season! And its not over yet. Some locals are getting ready for the 5430, IM Wisconsin or even Hawaii, while others are scrambling to get their 10 finishes in to compete for an age group title in the SW Challenge Series. [Dogdays] Is There no I in TeamT E A M..............look closely, you probably won't see an I in there. But I do. The concept of a team in triathlon is strange to some people. After all, triathlon is an individual sport, one pursued against the clock or each other. Except for a few variants of the draft legal kind.........triathlon is not a team sport. Think about it though.........maybe you played tennis or golf in school. If you did you were part of a team........even though those sports are considered individual events. [ team]Nice SeasonHey You! Yea, the one reading this article, nice season...good job. As we near the end of yet another Southwest Challenge Series the feeling around the TT/NM World Headquarters is bittersweet. The Time: 3:00PM The Place : Whataburger “Rattlesnake” Mark Mackenzie and I were sitting, recapping our race and enjoying our post race meal. We happily sat there ingesting our share of fat, carbs and protein when a vehicle pulled into the parking lot with 4 tri bikes on the back. We watched the occupants slowly file out and do the now familiar sliding your feet forward lifting them just enough to clear the pavement walk we’ve seen after many races. “Look” said Rattlesnake “They’re doing the Triathlete shuffle!” [Shuffle] One Year Ago............Melrose at midnight? That was our meeting point...Melrose, New Mexico to be exact. We got the word that the flag was running a little late......a little more time to think about what we were doing. I had talked to a few former military men that day.....they had just heard about the Flagrun.....and wished me luck. I'm no great runner.......It's just not in the genes for me........but I told myself and our former servicemen, no matter what....no matter if I have to walk (or crawl) the flag is getting through on my shift. [Oneyearago] Are You A Winner?Let’s face it........Triathlon is about winning. If it weren’t, we wouldn’t bother keeping times. Athletes would line up whenever they wished...........take off (with no chorus of beeps from run timers and heart rate monitors) and finish as they pleased. [Winner] |
