Short paragraph of Triathlon background to include, how long you have been doing Triathlons, maybe some names of races you’ve been in, any top finishes? John has been a runner for about 20 years before moving to New Mexico and taking up triathlons. In 1997 New England Runner named him the top 60 + runner for the state of Maine. Top Finishes: For the Southwest Challenge Series, in 2000 he finished 2nd in the 60 – 64 age group and in 2002 he finished 1st in the 65+ age group. For 2002 USA Triathlon named him 1st in the Rocky Mtn Region in his age group and 38th in the nation.. Worst Finishes: Too many to list. Favorite Race(s): All the races at White Sands Funniest thing that has happened to you during a race: In one of my early races in 2000, and before I knew it was against the rules, I was struggling in the swim and found myself walking in the shallow end of the pool. I looked over to the next lane and here was Mike Armstrong walking along as hard as he could – just then he looked over at me and we both burst out laughing. One piece of advice: If you think that the competition gets easier when you get older – you’re wrong. The number of competitors goes down but it seems as if all the good ones keep competing. Big race(s) of the year: National Age Group Championships in October. Favorite After Race recovery food: The free spaghetti lunch at White Sands. Best excuse for a bad performance: “I’m getting too old for this” Favorite Training routine: Easy run on mountain trails. Short paragraph about life outside of Triathlons: I like to read and now that I am retired I try to avoid responsibilities. I figure that I am old enough to justify not doing anything that I don’t want to. Thus I only do volunteer work that I enjoy doing. I do, however, mediate some cases for the Magistrate Court in Silver City. |
