Where do you live:  El Paso TX – moving to near Anthony, NM soon.

Short paragraph of Triathlon background to include, how long you have been doing Triathlons, maybe some names of races you’ve been in, any top finishes? This is my first full season in multi-sport, after having done 2 duathlons and 1 triathlon in 2002.

Top Finishes: I have placed in my age group in my last 4 races, two 3rds followed by two second place finishes.  I have yet to win an age group 1st and this is one of my goals for this season.

Worst Finishes: My first few as a beginner were my worst, but they were enjoyable.  I have been on the beginner’s quick improvement curve and have not yet had the disappointment or let down of feeling I’ve had a bad finish.

Favorite Race(s):  I have not done any other than at WSMR, Holloman and Santa Teresa.  My favorite race so far was the 2002 Polar Bear.

Funniest thing that has happened to you during a race: It actually happened in a ½ marathon, and not a multi-sport event.  On February 16, 2003, I ran the Las Palmas ½ Marathon in El Paso with a personal goal of trying to break 1:30:00.  (I didn’t (1:31:26), but that’s not too important to the story other than to explain why I had trouble drinking water.)  Just before the six mile water station, I consumed a “chocolate outrage” gu product.  It was still in my mouth – sort of – when I grabbed a water from a volunteer girl about 12 years old.  As I was breathing very hard right by her I swallowed wrong and a spray of very very dark brown water came out within about 3-4 feet from her.  Thinking it was bile, that  I was an alien, or something equally scary or disgusting, she screamed loudly.  Because I was racing I thanked her, but did not take the time to explain that I was not leaking body fluid or puking.

One piece of advice:  Eat only Cheetos and cotton candy the full week before a race.   Sorry, the only real advice I can think of is to recommend the Triathlon Bible and Swim, Bike, Run as helpful reading for anyone starting out.

Big race(s) of the year:  I have no current plans of peaking for any particular race.  I think the only minor problem with the SWCC rules is that it does not encourage what the literature recommends, peaking for 3-4 “A” races a year.

Favorite After Race recovery food:  Green chile cheeseburger, fries, and a nice cold glass of Endurox.

Best excuse for a bad performance:  I used up all my allotted excuses when I used to play golf.

Favorite Training routine:  Swim: any workout in which I do not drown Bike:  Anthony gap off of I-10 near the new community college – turning left toward WSMR – out 15-35 miles – and back.

Run:  A patent pending program called Carlek, coined after fartlek training.  After warming up 10 minutes – you switch between a speed interval to a slow jog recovery each time you are passed by a car.  Each time is different and if no cars come on a speed portion, it can become very painful to the point of collapse.  Do Carlek for 15-40 minutes, and complete workout with a 10 minute cool down run.  This workout is likely appropriate only every other month to add variety to speed workouts because it does involve a high risk of injury.

Short paragraph about life outside of Triathlons:  I have a great supportive family and try very hard for balance.   I enjoy singing the Barney song over and over and over to my daughter to drive my wife absolutely nuts.

I am a shareholder in Sandenaw & Piazza, P.C, in Las Cruces which involves a lot of work.  We have a very busy litigation practice involving the defense of physicians and hospitals and other matters covered by insurance.  Other than family and work, multi-sport is my only current hobby.
